In theory, this gives you a lot of musical freedom, but any professional musician that knows a thing or two about synths will tell you that modular synthesis is probably one of the last things you’ll learn, and only if you really want to.

    In other words, modular synthesis is pretty difficult. I won’t even pretend to completely understand ACE, even though it’s supposed to be friendlier than other virtual synths of its kind.

    ACE stands for Any Cable Everywhere which is a bit of an understatement. Firstly, as I’ve already stated in the subheading, the instrument is semi-modular, which means that some modules are hardwired by default. If you wish to play ACE as you would a normal synth, while adjusting various parameters, you can do just that. You obviously won’t get anything spectacular, but you’ll still be able to create powerful analog sounds.

    Secondly, not any cable can go exactly everywhere. If you try to make connections that won’t make any sense (like I  tried during testing), ACE simply won’t let you make that connection. Though it contradicts its name, this is obviously a good thing. While ACE may not be a very bad choice if you’re new to synths in general, it could be a really good choice if you already know a lot about synths and are just now getting into modular.

    Even though I can’t tell you what cable should go where in order to achieve a certain sound, I can tell you that ACE sounds great. While exploring its presets I discovered a versatile instrument, capable of synthesizing anything from clean percussions and leads to chaotic patterns achievable only through creative modulation. There’s little doubt that, with the right knowledge, you can make ACE play almost any tune you want.
